Making a Call Using VoIP

Hot Tip! A VoIP Hosted PBX is Dynamically Scalable: Up-size and Down-size on the fly. VoIP Hosted PBX Service lets you buy the exact number of users you need right now - later you can add users when you actually need them.

Voice over Internet Protocol also known as VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet Telephony and Broadband Phone, is revolutionising the way in which we make long distance phone calls. VoIP has made it possible to provide a method of communication very similar to the standard telephone network, using an Internet connection.

The increases in Internet bandwidth, when combined with the advances of audio compression and machine speed has allowed VoIP services to be capable of a high quality, sometimes even better than the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). However, many users are also likely to accept a drop in quality for the benefit of free long distance calls that using VoIP gives you. This being the case, an even wider range of people are able and likely to use these systems. It is not surprising therefore that VoIP is increasingly being used today.

With VoIP, there’s not just one way to make a call. There are actually three:

Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA) - With VoIP, you are able to use your existing telephone handsets, eliminating the cost of having to purchase any additional hardware. Currently, the most commonly used VoIP method is using an ATA which simply connects to your regular telephone and to your Internet connection. The ATA is an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) which takes the analogue signal (your voice) from your regular phone and converts it into digital data ready to be transmitted over the Internet. An ATA can either be purchased or provided free when you sign up with a VoIP Service Provider. Utilising an ATA is very basic, simply plug the cable from your phone into the ATA instead of the wall socket, and you’re set.

Hot Tip! A VoIP Hosted PBX Uses Non-Proprietary Components: When you buy a traditional PBX phone system, you’re locking your company into a long term commitment to a proprietary architecture that may or may not keep pace with technological changes. Bottom line, you are betting your company’s future that the proprietary technology will remain compatible with evolving industry standards.

IP Phones- IP Phones look just like standard telephones. They have a handset, buttons and a cradle. IP phones use an RJ-45 Ethernet connector instead of the standard RJ-11 phone connector. They already contain the relevant circuitry to convert your voice into digital data. An IP phone is more convenient for taking advantage of many of the extra features that are included free with your VoIP account - call display, call waiting, call forwarding, voicemail plus many other others. Wi-Fi IP phones are also now available allowing you to make VoIP calls from any Wi-Fi point.
An additional benefit that makes VoIP so attractive for home and small business users is flexibility. With VoIP, you can make a call anywhere there is broadband connection. Incoming VoIP calls can be automatically re-directed to your VoIP phone regardless of the location, as long as it is connected to the Internet. For business travellers, this means they can take their phone or ATA with them on their travels, and never miss a home phone call.

Hot Tip! The NAT (telecom Network) is blocking all VoIP calls..

Computer-to-Computer - Also known as SoftPhones, this is the most traditional and possibly the easiest way to use VoIP. With this method you can make free Internet phone calls worldwide. All that is required is a PC connected to a broadband internet connection, and a headset consisting of earphones and microphone connected to the soundcard of your computer. You will also need to download and install VoIP software. With the software installed, invite all your friends to download the same software and when someone is up and running, give them a call! VoIP software is free to download, and allows you to make completely free VoIP calls to other users of the same software, regardless of distance.

Instant messenger programs based on VoIP such as Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, and Gizmo Project also have the ability to be mobile, enabling you to receive and make phone calls using VoIP technology.

Salespeople-How Many Hours Can You Hack It On The Phone?

Hot Tip! Business Phone Systems provides detailed information on Business Phone Systems, Small Business Phone Systems, Affordable Business Phone Systems, Professional Business Phone Systems and more. Business Phone Systems is affiliated with Business Phone Services.

In one of the “Dirty Harry” movies, Clint Eastwood quietly says, “A man must know his limitations.”

Very true, and this definitely applies to phone work, whether you’re prospecting, appointment setting, or closing deals.

It’s not a topic I think about all that much, but it coursed through my mind tonight, as I was developing a prospecting campaign that I intend to execute, myself.

Hot Tip! Ensure that you are in a quiet place when the phone interview occurs.

I think people have different fatigue settings, but they’re unaware of them.

For me, doing outbound calling for an hour, and I mean a solid one, without breaks, is no big deal. In fact, I just start warming up, getting my phone voice strapped on at the half-hour point.

Two hours, with a quick break in there, is also comfortable.

And that’s it; my current sweet spot, and no more.

So, my campaign will entail two hours of outbound for a month, and I expect it will yield optimal results for me.

I realize it’s not practical to have two hour shifts at my clients’ sites, so at minimum, we schedule four hour sets for their employees. But when I started doing outbound selling for Time-Life Books, we worked only 3 hours per night, and 4 hours on Saturday morning, and it was ideal for college students.

The phone can be a grind, and I’ve never recommended eight-hour shifts. The productivity plummets dramatically, I’ve found after five hours.

You should experiment; especially if you’re an independent businessperson, or you’re in sales and are permitted to allocate your time as you wish.

By the way, if your tolerance level is only an hour or two, it’s not wimpy to acknowledge it, and act accordingly, because, after all, Dirty Harry is right!

Should You Sell By Using Phone Tricks?

Hot Tip! As the old saying goes, just because something can be done doesn’t mean that it should be done. Whether you have called it yourself or are merely attending at someone’s request, invitation, or order, a scheduled meeting is not the time for cell phone calls.

I picked up the office line and a live human, who sounded very much like a robot, said in a machine gun tempo:

“Hello I’m with XYZ Associates and this is not a sales call, it’s a survey and we’d appreciate your opinion. Who is the person who handles the bills for your SBC phone account?”

You know, I know, and probably everybody knows that this is patently false.

SBC has nothing to do with this survey. It’s a competing carrier that wants to identify the person who can switch the service to them.

And if they can get that person to come to the line, a sales effort will definitely be made.

What do you think of this approach? All may be fair in love and war, but does this also apply to selling?

How about this scenario:

You’ve been trying to reach someone that you believe is ducking your calls. Should you use a false name to get him or her on the line?

What if you call the customer service department of his company and ask to be transferred to him, knowing if they comply, you’ll appear as a company insider on his telephone display.

Is that fair?

Where should you draw the line between what is permissible, or ethical, and what isn’t?

Hot Tip! For an already-established company that wants to improve its phone system, the same factors are important: business size, customer’s needs, budget, and expansion plans. You should also look at your current phone system, to determine whether or not it can be expanded at a lower cost as opposed to total replacement.

I’m not going to tell you!

I believe you should figure it out for yourself, given your values. Once you do, you’ll probably feel a lot better about yourself, sound more confident as a result, and actually have your calls accepted with greater frequency.

VoIP – A Current Comparison of Skype vs Vonage

Hot Tip! Call Security: A VoIP service’s audio (your voice) should compress your voice into proprietary encryption packets to travel across the internet, and return back to voice at destination. That particular VoIP service should host proprietary software, and as such, the only one that can interpret the voice and data contained in those packets.

You have read about VoIP and wish to utilize the service either to get free calls to friends also using the service or for full telephony abilities. Either way, what is the current offers from two big VoIP providers? This article will do a comparison of the three VoIP providers to give the reader a starting point of where they may wish to look for a service.

Skype
With Skype calls to other Skype clients are free regardless of location.

However if you wish to make calls to non Skype clients then this is called “SkypeOut”. Calls can be made to the 20 most popular call destinations for the one SkypeOut global rate. At the time of writing this rate was 1.7 Euro Cents per minute equating to about 2 US cents or 1.1 pence. With SkypeOut there is no line rental and no contract fees.

The SkypeOut global rate includes the following countries:

Argentina (Buenos Aires), Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Canada (mobiles), Chile, China (Beijing, Guanzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen), China (mobiles), Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hong Kong (mobiles), Ireland, Italy, Mexico (Mexico City, Monterrey), Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland (Poland, Gdansk, Warsaw), Portugal, Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg), Singapore, Singapore (mobiles), South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan (Taipei), United Kingdom, United States (except Alaska and Hawaii) and United States (mobiles).

Hot Tip! And finally, in what is the worst disadvantage among all, if you lose your Internet connection for whatever reason imaginable, you lose your telephone service. Should you decide to depend almost entirely on VoIP service, then you are strongly advised to have a cell phone with you at all times.

It should be noted that unless specifically mentioned, this rate is only applicable to regular landline telephones with mobiles more expensive. However note that Canada, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and United States are listed under the SkypeOut global rate for calling mobiles.

Other destinations are available and it would be advisable to check this rate prior to obtaining credits or calling.

Hot Tip! It only works if your computer is switched on and the VOIP software is running.

Skype voicemail is available for a fee of 5 Euro for 3 months or 15 Euro for 12 months.

SkypeIn is where you wish to have a conventional phone number so you can be called from conventional phones. The fee for this service is 10 Euro for 3 months and 30 Euro for 12 months. Voicemail is included free if you subscribe to SkypeIn.
(source : www.skype.com).

Vonage
Vonage provides local and long distance calling anywhere in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico for the one price with calls to select European countries free with their unlimited plans.

In this article the two lowest fee packages will be examined.
Basic 500 - This includes 500 minutes for outgoing calls in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico for $14.99 a month. Unlimited minutes for incoming calls and 3.9 cents for each additional minute over 500 outgoing minutes with rates for other destinations.

Premium Unlimited Plan - This plan allows for unlimited local and long distance calls anywhere in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico and select European countries (some included below).

Hot Tip! A VoIP PBX Significantly Reduces Depreciation Losses: Traditional PBX systems depreciate almost 70% the day you take them out of their box. With a VoIP Hosted phone service, you won’t have to worry about depreciation since you’re not purchasing equipment.

Included features in both plans are:
- Voicemail Plus
- 3-Way Calling
- Call Waiting
- Call Forwarding
- Caller ID with Name
- 911 Dialing
- Free phone adapter if you sign up directly from Vonage
